Mendapatkan Kemenangan Kasino Online Anda dengan Uang Tunai, Segera

Kasino

Colleges & Universities Provide the Steps to Higher Learning

Colleges and universities are educational institutions that provide knowledge and skills for higher learning. Students who are accepted to colleges and universities are those who have graduated from high school or those who have completed the requirements for a high school diploma equivalent. However, there are some courses in colleges and universities that may require taking courses from preparatory schools before getting accepted. On the other hand, there are also some institutions that will take in only a small percentage of applicants based on a series of tests and qualifications such as art and theater schools.

Colleges and universities are quite similar in meaning and origin, but it was only recently that differences between the two were identified. These include universities defined as educational institutions with more than one college and offering higher education such as graduate programs. Meanwhile, colleges are defined as institutions that offer short courses and two-year course diplomas aside from their four year undergraduate degrees. Some colleges that have crossed-over into the definition of a university have retained their names with the word “college” in them due to historical reasons. This helps them to stay popular with students who are about to consider going to their particular college.

The first university in history was the Shangyang Higher School in China which was established during the Yu period between 2257 and 2208 BC. Other ancient universities originating from different countries include:

Takshashila University in Taxila, Pakistan established in 7th century BC
Nalanda University in Bihar, India which was famous for its center of Buddhist scholarship was established in 5th century BC
Plato’s Academy in Athens 387 BC, the first higher education institution in Europe
University of Salero in Italy 9th century
Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt circa 988
Most of the medieval universities in Europe were established under the guidance of the Catholic Church and were then known as cathedral schools or as “Studia Generali.” These universities were educational institutions which provided education for priests, monks and other students from different parts of Europe during the 12th century.

Most colleges and universities are run by a board of trustees or directors and by a group of school administrators. They are often funded by the government, by donors or by the tuition fees paid by the students who attend them. Most of these schools are located in the local town or within cities that are close to other educational institutions. Students often have to undergo exams and submit requirements before getting accepted especially when applying for scholarships or if they come from other countries.

In the United States, where the first institutions of higher education were University of Oxford & the University of Cambridge, the terms college and university can be used interchangeably even though colleges may often refer to liberal arts colleges or those that offer vocational, business, engineering or technical courses. Both colleges and universities refer to any post-secondary undergraduate education and which are operated as public or private institutions.

Applying To Colleges & Universities

When applying to colleges and/or universities, it is best to do so as early as possible. The earlier you apply, the better chances you will have of being accepted into your program of interest. As expected, many college courses fill up quickly, which is why early applications often stand a better chance of acceptance.

Before applying to certain colleges and/or universities, it is a good idea to review their freshman enrollment requirements. These requirements generally pertain to anyone who has graduated from high school within the past five years. Beyond that, required high school courses are not as highly considered due to the fact that so much time has passed. Therefore, even if you did not take the necessary high school courses, you may be able to attend the college of your choice if you are willing to wait for five or more years before enrolling.

Almost every college and/or university charges an application fee when applying. This fee is generally very reasonable and is often less than $50.00. This is a non-refundable fee, which is not refunded for any reason including a denial of acceptance. Applications to colleges and/or universities will often be under advisement for several weeks. At that time, the school will either send a letter of congratulations or one of denial.

Many modern colleges and universities have websites and even allow applications to be submitted online. This is believed to speed up the application process and may result in a quicker decision than if submitted by mail. In the case of online applications, the application fee will generally be charged to a major credit card. If you do not have a credit card, you may have to mail your application along with a check or money order. It is important to remember that, under no circumstances, should you ever send cash through the mail.

Once you receive the college or university’s acceptance, if applicable, it will be time to begin plans for enrollment. Many do not know this, but there is a big difference between acceptance and enrollment. Being accepted does not automatically mean the student is enrolled as this is just another step in the quest for a college education. During enrollment, a class schedule will be granted and, if requested, a campus room will be assigned. There are a number of living arrangements for college students, which may include on-campus housing, living with roommates, living alone or living at home with family. Living on campus is not a requirement of colleges or universities, but it does make for an easier commute to and from class.

Colleges, Universities and the Entrepreneurial Mind Set

Most all universities have career days and brag about putting 85% of the graduates in top fortune 500 companies as a way to get parents to pony up the money and attract top students to their schools. Colleges and universities and their placement, well this is a very big part of what they do and why people go to college in the first place. Indeed these employers is where a lot of funding comes from, interns as well. But what if you are an entrepreneur and not on the career-employment track?

Let me explain my premise. You see, I attended some college and I have an AS, AA, but I do not count those, it seemed more like a continuation of advanced HS classes to me. I believe for me, it was a waste of time. I had a business to run and I knew enough to know that the brain washing was not for what I was looking for.

Additionally, these colleges were not teaching to my abilities only making me absorb through rote memorization. This was not answering my questions that came from real world experience prior to attendance. That is my experience. I am of the belief that a life time of learning is far more important.

Many people stop learning after college, now on-going education requirements in many fields is making people continue, but on their own many do not. That is a shame and a 10-year old degree in many fields is worthless for the most part as new technologies come into play. Worse off only about 25% of the people with degrees ever remain in that field over time.

Now, I am very careful when someone trumpets their degrees in my face, because in the real (business) world anyway, I only care about one thing. Winning and performance, not a piece of paper. Either they have what it takes or they are soaking up real money and not getting the job done; so see ya! They are outta here.

Lots of letters next to their name, sure thats nice, but results are much more exciting. I find it funny often that after all I have done some folks just think because I do not have some advanced degree that I do not know what I am talking about, because I do. Someone once accused me of going to a diploma mill, that is insane, I certainly would not do such a thing.

In fact, I have a McDonalds hat hanging in my office it says; “Here is my Degree” and it is a badge of honor to not have one and still have built my company. I suppose Gates and others feel the same, “in your face” but I have never heard them say it, I just suspect it. Entrepreneurs who know their stuff need not have a piece of paper proving it.

I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

Choosing the Right College/University for Your Child

The time comes when every parent has to assist their child in making the right choice of university or college. This all important decision should not be left until the last moment but requires considerable time, thought, and research. When you consider the fact that three to four years of your child’s life plus an investment of thousands of dollars into his/her education is required, it is prudent to get involved as a parent.

So how do you ensure that you’re making the right decision?

The first thing that parents need to do is know your child. You should know what his interests and gifting are. If your child loves the Arts, then you cannot be, or should not be forcing him to pursue the Sciences. You should also know whether or not your teen works best independently or in a group setting; or whether he learns better in a small classroom setting. Is your teen easily distracted and lacks self-discipline or is he focused and disciplined? All these factors will play a major part in your choice of college or university.

Secondly, much research has to be done on the programs that your child is interested in and compare and contrast each college/university’s offering of that program. Which ones are best geared towards his career goals and which subjects are a better fit for what he’s interested in.

Thirdly, cost is usually a significant factor in coming to a decision. Therefore, after narrowing the choices down based on the first two factors, you must compare the cost of your child studying at one particular college as against another. In addition to tuition, your finances will determine whether or not your child can attend a local college/university or one away from home. Can he attend the more expensive Ivy League university or will it be more affordable for him to attend an equally reputable but less expensive one?

Fourthly, it is also a good thing to consider campus spirit as you’d want your teen to enjoy campus life. What clubs does each university/college offer and what opportunities are there for self-development or for community service?

Lastly, it is good to visit the various campuses and get a feel of the environment in which your teen will be. On campus tours, you’ll meet professors and lecturers and hear directly from them on their accessibility.
